What you need is an assembled add on prototyping Pi T-Cobbler from Adafruit, which can break out all those tasty power, GPIO, I2C and SPI pins from the 26 pin header onto a solderless breadboard. This mini kit will make "cobbling together" prototypes with the Pi super easy. Designed for Raspberry Pi Model B Revision 1 or Revision 2. Designed for use with original Raspberry Pi Model B AND Model A, both revisions. We also have the more compact original Cobbler. The assembled Pi T-Cobbler mini kit comes with a 26 pin ribbon cable, and an already soldered T-Cobbler as shown. No soldering required! This mini kit comes fully assembled!

The PCB and header come soldered together so you can plug the cable between the Pi computer and the T-Cobbler breakout. The T-Cobbler can plug into any solderless breadboard (or even a prototyping board like the PermaProto). The T-Cobbler PCB has all the pins labeled nicely so you can go forth and build circuits without keeping a pin-out printout at your desk. We think this will make it more fun to expand the Pi and build custom circuitry with it.

The Adafruit Pi T-Cobbler is compatible with Model A and Model B both versions 1 and 2 of the Raspberry Pi Computer - for version 2 computers, note that the GPIO #21 has been replaced with GPIO #27 and that the I2C pins are now I2C port #1 instead of #0. First up, there's a big prototyping area, half of which is 'breadboard' style and half of which is 'perfboard' style so you can wire up DIP chips, sensors, and the like. Along the edges of the proto area, all the GPIO/I2C/SPI and power pins are broken out to 0.1" stips so you can easily connect to them. On the edges of the prototyping area, (almost all of) the breakout pins are also connected to labeled 3.5mm screw-terminal blocks. This makes it easy to semi-permanently wire in sensors, LEDs, etc. There's also a 4-block terminal block broken out to 0.1" pads for general non-GPIO wiring. Finally, we had a little space remaining over the metal connectors so we put in an SOIC surface mount chip breakout area, for those chips that dont come in DIP format.

This kit comes as a set of parts, a little soldering is required to put it together but its really easy, even a beginner can do it in 15-20 minutes or so. The Pi (and our kits) are meant to help us all learn skills, soldering is fun! Check out our tutorial for how to assemble

The nice thing about this plate is we're getting custom header breakouts that are taller than usual, so that the proto plate sits above the metal connectors, out of the way and allows for plenty of workspace. It fits in our Pi Box enclosure with access to the terminal blocks so you can keep the Pi safe while prototyping. We really like the RGB Character LCDs we stock in the shop. (For RGB we have RGB negative and RGB positive.) Unfortunately, these LCDs do require quite a few digital pins, 6 to control the LCD and then another 3 to control the RGB backlight for a total of 9 pins. That's nearly all the GPIO available on a Pi!

With this in mind, we wanted to make it easier for people to get these LCDs into their projects so we devised a Pi plate that lets you control a 16x2 Character LCD, up to 3 backlight pins AND 5 keypad pins using only the two I2C pins on the R-Pi! The best part is you don't really lose those two pins either, since you can stick i2c-based sensors, RTCs, etc and have them share the I2C bus. This is a super slick way to add a display without all the wiring hassle.

We've updated this Pi plate so the buttons on on the right side, which makes it a little more mechanically stable

This pi plate is perfect for when you want to build a stand-alone project with its own user interface. The 4 directional buttons plus the select button allows basic control without having to attach a bulky computer.

The plate is designed for both Revision 1 and Revision 2 Raspberry Pi's. It uses the I2C (SDA/SCL) pins. We have a special extra-tall 26-pin header so the plate sits above the USB and Ethernet jacks. For Pi Model B+ and Pi 2, the resistors sit right above the new set of USB ports. To keep them from shorting against the metal, a piece of electrical tape must be placed onto the USB ports.

This product comes as a kit! Included is a high-quality PCB and all the components (buttons, header etc). A 16x2 Character RGB positive LCD is included! Assembly is easy, even if you've never soldered before and the kit can be completed in 30 minutes. Check the product tutorial page for assembly instructions before purchasing

We also have some handy Python code to help you easily talk to the LCD and buttons. You can also easily query the 5 keypad buttons to get input through the library, so you get extra buttons without using any more pins. The buttons are automatically de-bounced inside the library.

At this time, the code and plate can control the RGB backlight of our character LCDs by turning each LED on or off. This means you can display the following colours: Red, Yellow, Green, Teal, Blue, Violet, White and all off. There is no support for PWM control of the backlight at this time, so if you need to have more granular control of the RGB backlight to display a larger range of colours, this plate can't do that (the I2C expander does not have PWM output).

Specifications

Dimensions: 2.2" x 3.35"

Comes with a 16x2 RGB POSITIVE LCD

Plug and play with any Raspberry Pi

Uses only the I2C (SDA/SCL) pins

Resources

Downloads

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0736/5289/5833/files/adafruit-rgb-positive-16-x-2-lcdkeypad-kit-for-raspberry-pi-discontinued_1.jpg?v=1789671407
kodi-edition-raspberry-pi-3-flirc-case-discontinued
Kodi Edition Raspberry Pi 3 FLIRC Case [Discontinued]

What is the Kodi Edition Raspberry Pi Case?

Flirc was invited to share and create in the building of the first Kodi hardware product. The board is based around the MCP23017 16-bit I/O expander from Microchip Technology Inc. A MCP23017 expander is included on the board allowing you to connect up to 16 digital inputs or outputs to the Raspberry Pi. The IO Pi Zero Expander is powered through the host Raspberry Pi using the GPIO port and extended pins on the GPIO connector allow you to stack the IO Pi Zero along with other expansion boards.

The I2C address bits are selectable using the on-board jumpers. The MCP23017 supports up to 8 different I2C addresses so with one MCP23017 device on each IO Pi Zero you can stack up to 8 IO Pi Zero boards on a single Raspberry Pi giving a maximum of 128 I/O ports.

The IO Pi includes a 5V port that can be isolated from the Raspberry Pi via an isolation solder jumper so you can use a seperate high current power supply to power the IO Pi reducing the load on the Raspberry Pi. Use of an external supply is recommended if you plan on connecting more than one IO Pi to your Raspberry Pi.

I2C Address Selection

The MCP23017 contains three address select pins which can be tied to Vss or Vdd. This gives 8 possible I2C addresses for each chip. The IO Pi Zero contains one MCP23017 chip so you can stack up to 8 IO Pi boards on a single Raspberry Pi. To simplify address selection on the IO Pi we have included a set of address selection pads which can be configured by applying a small solder bridge across the required pads. The table below show the recommended configurations for your IO Pi and the associated I2C addresses.

Note:
Disconnect the IO Pi from the Raspberry Pi before changing the address pins. The address pins are tied to GND (low) via a 10K resistor so the jumper is used to tie a pin to Vcc (high).

Default Configuration (IC1 = It can do up to 10 location updates a second for high-speed, high-sensitivity logging, or tracking. Power usage is incredibly low, only 30 mA during navigation.

We found and are using a nearly identical version of the module - it's a little taller (4mm) but has the same functionality. The commands for querying the antenna have changed slightly so existing projects may need to update their firmware.

The module is kept small and simple, we have a ferrite bead, filter capacitor and red fix LED on board. The LED blinks at about 1Hz while it's searching for satellites and blinks once every 15 seconds when a fix is found to conserve power. If you want to have an LED on all the time, we also provide the FIX signal out on a pin so you can put an external LED on.

Two features that really stand out about the MTK3333-based module are the external antenna functionality and the built-in data-logging capability. The module has a standard ceramic patch antenna that gives it -165 dB sensitivity, but when you want to have a bigger antenna, you can snap on any 3V active GPS antenna via the uFL connector. The module will automatically detect the active antenna and switch over! Most GPS antennas use SMA connectors so you may want to pick up one of our uFL to SMA adapters.

The other cool feature of the new MTK3333-based module (which we have tested with great success) is the built-in data-logging ability. Since there is a microcontroller inside the module, with some empty FLASH memory, the newest firmware now allows sending commands to do internal logging to that FLASH. The only thing is that you do need to have the Flora mainboard send the "Start Logging" command. However, after that message is sent, Flora can go to sleep and does not need to wake up to talk to the GPS anymore to reduce power consumption. The time, date, longitude, latitude, and height are logged every 15 seconds and only when there is a fix. The internal FLASH can store about 16 hours of data, it will automatically append data so you don't have to worry about accidentally losing data if power is lost. It is not possible to change what is logged and how often, as it's hardcoded into the module but we found that this arrangement covers many of the most common GPS datalogging requirements.

Comes with one fully assembled and tested module. If you'd like to back up the RTC for faster fix-recovery, pick up a sewable CR2032 holder & CR2032 battery and sew it so the + side connects to the VBAT pad and the - side connects to the ground.

Note: Cables, batteries and boards are NOT included

Revision History

As of June 12, 2024 - The original GPS module is no longer available, so we've replaced it with a nearly identical GPS module that has the same shape and performance. Check the product tutorial page for assembly instructions before purchasing.

This means you can display the following colours: Red, Yellow, Green, Teal, Blue, Violet, White and all colours turned off. There is no support for PWM control of the backlight at this time, so if you need to have more granular control of the RGB backlight to display a larger range of colours, this plate can't do that (the I2C expander does not have PWM output).

Note: We've updated this Pi plate so there are buttons on the right side which makes it a little more mechanically stable.

Specifications

Dimensions: 2.2" x 3.35"

Comes with a 16x2 RGB NEGATIVE LCD

Plug and play with any Raspberry Pi

Uses only the I2C (SDA/SCL) pins

This board/chip uses I2C 7-bit address 0x20.

PCB files, schematic, and Fritzing available in the product tutorial

Resources

Product Guide

Downloads and Schematic

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0736/5289/5833/files/adafruit-rgb-negative-16-x-2-lcdkeypad-kit-for-raspberry-pi-discontinued_1.jpg?v=1789671660
